Praying Scripture for Israel
When I teach on prayer, I often encourage people to pray over an open Bible. The Spirit seemed to direct me to the little book of Nahum today which contains the prophet’s prediction of the siege and destruction of Nineveh and the end of the Assyrian empire. This is to say, I understand the context, but a promise is a promise and here was the one I seized upon today:
“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.”
This promise stands out amidst the Lord’s anger against Nineveh and all who set themselves against His people. Beware, all who do! “The Lord takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies (1:2). “The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at His presence…” (1:5). “Whatever they plot against the Lord he will bring to an end…” (1:9). “Although they (God’s enemies) have allies and are numerous, they will be destroyed and pass away” (1:12a). But to those who trust in Him, “Although I have afflicted you, Judah, I will afflict you no more” (1:12b).
And then Nahum boldly declares, “Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed (1:15). Terrorist attackers have advanced against those who trust in God. “The Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel” (2:2). Why? “The protective shield is put in place…” (2:8). The Lord dares them “Look at your troops—they’re all weaklings..” (2:13). Lord, we pray that You will show yourself strong and Mighty against all who pursue the destruction of your people Israel. Many have tried in the past to their own destruction. And now they are at it again.
It is a frightful thing when the Lord Almighty says, “I am against you…” (2:13). “Who can withstand His indignation? His wrath poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before Him” (1:6). And just across page 1011 in my NIV Bible, on page 1012 I read this: “As in the days when you came out of Egypt, I will show them my wonders. Nations will see and be ashamed, deprived of all their power” (Micah 7:15-16). Yes, Lord, “You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on both to (their) ancestors in days long ago” (7:20). Our refuge in trouble cares for those who trust in Him.
